World Domination

The Project for a New American Century (PNAC) is one of many Neo-Fascist Conservative pseudo-think tanks established by the NFC movement to influence U.S. foreign policy, but it is uniquely dangerous because many of its major ideologues are now in power in the Bush regime. The PNAC could never be accused of being a right wing conspiracy because like their European forefathers in the first Fascist movements, they have for many years openly declared their aggressive Nationalist intentions of world domination (Leadership) by the greatness of the U.S. military.

As early as 1998, the PNAC Gang was attempting to persuade the Clinton Administration to go to war with Iraq. This excerpt is from a PNAC letter to President Clinton;

“In the long term it means removing Saddam Hussein and his regime from power…We believe the U.S. has the authority under existing UN resolutions, to take the necessary steps, including military steps to protect our vital interests in the Gulf. The PNAC Plan called “Rebuilding America’s Defenses” issued in September 2000 was a foreign policy term paper and an application for employment by the PNAC gang; many of whom were placed into positions in the Bush regime where they could actually implement their insane ambitions. The 2000 Plan openly proclaimed a Grand Strategy”, for a new Unipolar World Order, Dominated by the Preeminent Military Power of the United States.

The Plan was an NFC Ultranationalist Imperial Strategy, for U.S. Full Spectrum Domination of the entire world, especially the Arab Middle East, and the energy rich Central Asian countries. It completely embraced the illegal Doctrine of Preventive Wars.

When the Bush regime came to power, the PNAC ideologues had an opportunity to achieve another of their most important strategic goals, the discrediting of the UN:

“While the U.S. will constantly strive to enlist the support of the International community, we will not hesitate to act alone, if necessary, to exercise our right of self-defense by acting pre-emptively against such terrorists, to prevent them from doing harm against our people and our country.”

On September 17, 2002, the Bush Administration issued an Official Position Paper entitled: The National Security Strategy for the United States of America. This Presidential Doctrine echoed the goals and methods advocated by the NFC PNAC.

“America’s new National Security Strategy, is a succinct presentation of Military Dominance; that rejects the Policies of Deterrence, Containment, and Collective Security. Instead, the new Grand Strategy stresses Offensive Military Intervention, Preemptive First strikes, and proactive counter proliferation measures against rogue states. Put simply, the U.S. Security Strategy is no longer one of Defense and Reaction but Offense.”

This NFC Doctrine has not been withdrawn after the debacle of the Intelligence manipulation by the Bush regime in the leadup to the illegal Iraq War, and it is still the NFC Republican National Strategy.

The NFC PNAC Plan was set into motion by illegally invading the Country of Iraq, and waging a War of Aggression, for the purpose of establishing a permanent stronghold of Bases, from which to wage future wars against any and all nations, that opposed U.S. “Vital Interests in the greater Middle East. This bizarre Plan, will take decades, to accomplish, at a cost of tens of thousands, and possibly millions of American and Arab lives, and many hundreds of Billions or Trillions of U.S. taxpayer dollars.

NFC Imperialism objective is reflected in all fields of international relations, including Cyberspace.

Cyber-Imperialism

European Union diplomats in Geneva recently raised a contentious issue about who should control the Worldwide Web or Internet. At the present time the U.S. has been the principal overseer of the Internet, since it was invented by Scientists working for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) of the DOD.

Some countries, especially in the EU have become aware of the potential for surveillance and abuse of the worldwide net by the U.S.; similar to the worldwide surveillance of all radio telecommunications currently conducted by the U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency. In September, 2005, the EU nations proposed a new “Cooperation Model” removing control of the worldwide net from the U.S. and to assigning it to an International group; possibly under UN supervision. The U.S. Ambassador said;

“…the U.S. is deeply disappointed, there are certain things we can agree to and certain things we can’t agree to. It’s not a negotiating issue. This is a matter of National Policy.”

It has long been believed that the Internet system has, built into its control software, a surveillance feature, which has enables the DOD to spy on all security, political, and economic, Internet messages worldwide. The proposal demonstrates the U.S. intention to dominate and control the nerve center of the new global economy, but it may also signal the end of the EU sheepishly agreeing to such domination.

It will be a tragedy if this system which has knitted the world together into one peaceful communications network is abandoned by other nations because the U.S. insists on dominating the Worldwide Web; however that may be the best for other nations in the long run.

RE-ARMAMENT FOR WORLD MILITARY SUPREMACY

The U.S. REPRESENTS ALMOST 50% OF THE WORLD’S GLOBAL MILITARY SPENDING OF $ 956 BILLION ANNUALLY, CLOSE TO THE COLD WAR PEAK, GROWING AT AN ANNUAL RATE OF 11% PER YEAR. THE DOD BUDGET FOR FY 2006 IS $497.9 BILLION, THE HIGHEST SINCE THE PEAK OF THE COLD WAR.

Deterrence Mission Ends

The Peacekeeper Intercontinental ballistic missile mission came to an end Sept. 19, 2005, during a ceremony at F.E. Warren AFB, Wyoming. The missile had been phased out in accordance with the Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty (START) The Peacekeeper, and other strategic intercontinental missile’s locations were known by our adversaries during the Cold War, and served a stabilizing role, proving the effectiveness of Deterrence and Multi-lateral cooperative Defense.

The Bush regime could have seized the opportunity in the aftermath of the collapse of the Soviet Union, to make the United Nations truly effective. An effective U.N. that had the full support of the U.S. could have created a world where Big Power states would never again face the prospects of a Nuclear catastrophe. Instead, the NFC Republicans have poked their finger into the collective eyes of the nations of the world, insulted their representatives at every opportunity, and started the development of new Offensive Weapons Systems that are de-stabilizing, confrontational, and which will assure that a Nuclear World War will be conducted someday; against China, Russia, or some other enemy to be determined.

Changing U.S. Nuclear Policy to “First Use

On October 11, 2005, Walter Pincus of the Washington Post wrote that; “The Pentagon has drafted a revised doctrine for the use of nuclear weapons that envisions commanders requesting presidential approval to use them to preempt an attack by a nation or a terrorist group using weapons of mass destruction. The draft also includes the option of using nuclear arms to destroy known enemy stockpiles of nuclear, biological or chemical weapons

Developing New “More Usable” Nuclear Weapons

Without a National debate, Mr. Bush has authorized the development of two new, “More Usable” Nuclear Weapons, through the NFC Republican Controlled Congress.

By restarting Nuclear Weapons Development and Testing of Thermonuclear Bunker Busters” such as the “Robust Nuclear Earth Penetrator”, which will throw up enormous clouds of deadly radioactive dust, that would fallout all over the globe, Mr. Bush and his allies in Congress demonstrated a degree of recklessness not seen since the reign of the dictators of the Soviet Union, at the peak of the Cold War.

The creation of this new family of Nuclear Weapons and the resumption of nuclear testing, by the U.S., was a peremptory, provocative, and unambiguously destabilizing development. By lowering the nuclear threshold, and putting the Nuclear Proliferation Treaty in jeopardy, Mr. Bush greatly increased the risk of a nuclear holocaust, and reversed decades of difficult work at nuclear disarmament, by many nations of the world, and by every American President of both parties, since WWII.

On March 8, 2004, an International Group of Religious and Scientific leaders expressed concern over U.S. plans to develop the new generation of Nuclear Bombs. The group included the U.S. National Council of Churches, the Roman Catholic Pax Christi Organization, and four Nobel Laureates. The new developments are a violation of the Treaty on the Nonproliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT).

The group stated that “these were weapons in search of a Mission.

Bush Regime calls for the elimination of Weapons of Mass Destruction, ring hollow, when the policy has been: do as I say, not do as I do. As the world’s remaining military superpower, and with no credible opponents; the quantity, quality, destructive power, and versatility of U.S. Nuclear forces, with over 9,300 warheads, and a Triad of Strategic delivery systems, including land and sea based missiles, and strategic bombers have no equal. The U.S. has an obligation to humanity, to lead the world away from the threat of nuclear war, not to find new ways to make Nuclear weapons more “usable”.

The U.S. has already violated the NPT with the employment of Nuclear “Dirty Weapons” containing depleted uranium, during the two wars in Iraq!

These are the current estimates of Nuclear Stockpiles, and it is obvious that the risk to the U.S. from Iraq, North Korea, or anyone else is minimal; as they have few weapons and an attack on the U.S. would mean the end of their civilization:

- United States: About 6,000 strategic (intercontinental range) nuclear weapons; 1,670 to 3,300 tactical (short-range) nuclear weapons.

- Russia: About 5,500 strategic nuclear weapons; 3,000 to 4,000 tactical nuclear weapons.

- China: About 400 strategic and tactical nuclear weapons.

- France: 384 strategic nuclear weapons; 60 to 80 tactical nuclear weapons.

- Britain: 185 strategic nuclear weapons.

- India: 30 to 100 nuclear weapons.

- Pakistan: 15 to 50 nuclear weapons.

- Israel: 100 to 200 nuclear weapons.

- North Korea: One to two nuclear weapons.

- Iran is believed to be developing nuclear weapons, with estimates ranging between from five to 20 years away.

Space Militarization- Son of Star Wars Returns

Prior to the 911 attack, Mr. Bush ignored the threats of Unconventional Warfare, and concentrated his efforts on Space and Strategic weapons. Refusing to learn from the 911 attack, the NFC Republican Bush regime still chooses to invest the nation’s limited resources in the development of expensive and new untested Hi-Tech, Hi-Cost, Strategic Space weaponry, including the premature deployment of the Star Wars missile defense system, that threatens to turn the near Earth space environment into a space minefield.

The first step was to abrogate the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty. While Reagan embraced the Space based Anti-Missile program called the “Strategic Defense Initiative” he knew that it was a bankrupting type of project with little hope of success, and gave it lip service; restricting the military’s efforts to Research and Testing. When Bush arrived he concentrated the first year of his first term working on plans to end the ABM Treaty, and to resuscitate this idea which theoretically will give any nation the ability to conduct Nuclear War on others without suffering any damage to its own homeland and forces.

The technically challenged Mr. Bush listened to the ideologues and ignored the 20 years of research and testing to no result; and authorized a program to field a ground based Anti-Missile systems which was untested and unproven.

Bush was unable to comprehend that Hi-Tech weaponry had proved of no use against the pedestrian “boxcutter” weapons used for the sucessful attack on 9/11.

Re: Son of Star Wars Deployment:

This demonstrates the NFC Republican Party’s fascination with 20th Century cold war military weaponry and Doctrine. There is no other nation on earth that can realistically threaten the U.S. with nuclear missiles or space-based weapons; without risking total annihilation.

Bush Has Unilaterally Directed the Weaponization of Outer Space:

“The mission of the United States Air Force is to deliver ‘sovereign options’ for the defense of the United States of America and its ‘global interests’ -- to fly and fight in Air, Space, and Cyberspace.”

The new USAF Mission statement is indicative of the NFC movement’s perversion of the U.S. military’s role from one of Defense of the American people, to one that will fly and fight to defend the Empire of “Global Interests” for an American “Sovereign” (King-Emperor-Chief Priest).

The USAF currently considers it’s domain as that area ranging from the surface of the earth up to geosynchronous orbit (22,000 miles) however the only man made objects in this regime are weather, communications, and surveillance satellites. There are no known or anticipated offensive space weapons in existence or being developed by any nation, that could threaten the U.S., and they would have little or no utility because everything in Space, especially in earth orbit is constantly being observed, and an attack against a space satellite would be tantamount to a declaration of war.

On February 17, 2004, the USAF revealed its plans for the development of a stunning array of Offensive Space Weapons including; Air Launched Missiles, Space Based Lasers, and a Space Flight system of Hypervelocity Rod Bundles (called Rods from God) which provide non-Nuclear Space-To-Earth Strategic Bombardment capability.

Space Offensive Strategy

The NY Times reported that the Pentagon's plans to militarize space had definitely emerged by mid-May 2005, when the US Air Force formally asked Bush to issue a presidential directive that allows the Air Force to deploy defensive and offensive weapons into orbit. Formally, the new directive was necessary to replace a previous decree (PDD-NSC-49 - National Space Policy) issued by the Clinton administration, which forbid the indiscriminate militarization of space. While the decree has not yet been issued, speculation over the Pentagon's intentions, have already hit the news.

After the 2002 unilateral US withdrawal from the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty, worries were raised about Washington's possible start of such a program, for it could transform space into a new battlefield. The US Air Force request, coupled with the April 2005 launch of the XSS-11 orbital micro-satellite, increased the concerns of observers and world powers. XSS-11 is specifically designed to disturb other states' military/reconnaissance or communication satellites. A discontinuance of US traditional policy about the restricted (peaceful) use of space will engender a new arms race with China and Russia, even though it appears economically and technologically challenging and beyond the capability of smaller states.

Global Strike Space Bombers

On the technological level, the Pentagon's planning is in the advanced stage: some projects aimed at space weaponization have already been in place for some time. Among the (partially known) Pentagon's new plans, the two most alarming projects are the "Global Strike" program and the "Rods from God" program. Global Strike involves the employment of military space planes capable of carrying about 500 kilograms (1,100 pounds) of high-precision weapons (with a circular error probability less than three meters) with the primary use of striking enemy military bases and command and control facilities in any point of the world.

The mission of military space planes is to attack any spot on the globe within 45 minutes. This is a short period of time that could provide US forces with a formidable quick-reaction capability, as opposed to an enemy's subsequent inability to organize any effective defense. Such a weapon's primary target would be the enemy's strategic forces and according to US Air Force sources widely quoted in the news, the Pentagon is inclined to give priority to this project. One of the main reasons, these sources say, is that the Pentagon itself - after spending more than $100 billion - has finally admitted its failure to create an infallible earth-based, anti-missile system to protect American soil from ballistic strikes.

The US Air Force often makes wild claims about the space plane's wide operational spectrum, which would encompass that of a strategic weapon as well as that of its defensive uses of neutralizing nuclear missiles; and the ability to target and eliminate militant and terrorist leaders. They claim the space plane could also be employed to suppress long-range air defenses, due to its high mobility, hyper-fast deployment and its immunity to the defenses of its opponents. Other uses could be envisaged in the Integrated Air Defense System, as well as surveillance tasks. They also claim that space planes could be easily deployed to support the US Army's rapid reaction force and units of Marines during power-projection operations and redeployment phases.

In January 2003, the Bush administration announced a $3 billion Nuclear Systems research and development Initiative, which would expand the number of launches of deadly nuclear powered systems into space.

“Project Prometheus”, named after the ancient God of Fire, is a nuclear rocket that is being justified as part of the Lunar-Mars Civil Space Initiative. The Nuclear powered Prometheus would cut in half the amount of time it would take to get to Mars; however its stealth purpose is military applications.

Rods from God” - The Christian-Nationalists love this one!

It is an evolution of a 1980s program. Basically, it consists of orbiting platforms stocked with metal tungsten rods about 6.1 meters long (20 feet) and 30 centimeters (one foot) in diameter that could be satellite-guided to targets anywhere on the earth within minutes, for the rods would move at more than 11,000 kilometers an hour (6,835 miles per hour). This weapon exploits kinetic energy to cause an explosion the same magnitude of that of an earth-penetrating nuclear weapon, but with no radioactive fallout. The system would function due to two satellites, one of which would work as a communications platform, while the other would contain an arsenal of tungsten rods. Each of the satellites would be seven meters long and its diameter would be approximately 30 centimeters.

Another Air Force Space Command craze announced in the summer of 2005, is to place Combat Skysat vehicles into low earth space including; balloons, airships, and anything else that is persistent, cost-effective, survivable, and responsive into the region now defined as “Near Space” (from 12 to 62 miles up) an area where there is virtually no traffic.

Preoccupation with “Full Spectrum Dominance” and Space Warfare and other “Wonder Weapons” is pure extreme right wing NFC World Domination ideology, not the Military Strategy of a peaceful Democracy. The current deterrent strength of the U.S. military is sufficient to guarantee Strategic Defense against all potential adversarial nations, simultaneously, and there is no credible threat to our Space Assets; or access to Space during this century.

“BRING EM ON”-RECKLESS NUCLEAR SABER RATTLING

With all of the other crises facing the U.S., Mr. Bush using absolutist Manichean language of Good and Evil, threatened a Nuclear War in the Middle East, and in Asia, at the same time, by recklessly inciting the despotic regimes of Iran and North Korea, calling them members of an “Axis of Evil.”

“The solemn reaffirmation of the existence and solidarity of the Rome-Berlin Axis is not directed at other States, because we, Nazis and Fascists alike, want peace and are always ready to work for peace, for a real and fruitful peace which does not ignore but resolves the problems of the co-existence of people…both of us count on youth, from which we demand the virtues of discipline, courage, tenacity, patriotism, and scorn for the comfortable life…Both believe in violence as a force determining the life of peoples, as the dynamo of their history.”

The illiterate Mr. Bush, apparently had no idea what the context had been of Benito Mussolini’s infamous Speech, wherein he coined the term. The Pact of Steel or “Axis Powers”. Mussolini was referring to the fact that all of the countries of Europe surrounding the Rome-Berlin Axis would be the enemies of the Axis Powers. There could hardly have been a Baghdad-Pyongyang-Tehran Axis, except in Bush’s unsophisticated mind.

Citing North Korea, Iran, and Iraq;

“States like these, and their terrorist allies, constitute an ‘Axis of Evil,’ arming to threaten the peace of the world.”

Throughout the past several years, in a series of Hitlerian conflicting signals, about his intentions, Bush has kept the up a drumbeat of threats to Iran and North Korea, and eventually issued a stern warning to Iran, in August, 2005.

Bush had previously said that diplomacy should be used to persuade Iran to suspend its Nuclear Program, and if that failed, the U.N. Security Council should impose sanctions.

Iran is next for a “Pre-Emptive” Attack—After 2006 Elections!

Speaking on Israeli Television in August 2005, Bush recklessly threatened Iran:

“The United States and Israel are united in our objective to make sure that Iran does not have a weapon, but if Diplomacy fails, all options are on the table. The use of force is the last resort for any President. You know, we’ve used force in the past to secure our country”

Informed news sources, began reporting in late 2005, that the administration has developed contingency plans for the use of nuclear weapons against seven other countries and against weapons of mass destruction (WMD) stockpiles of what it considers to be “rogue states.”

In its dramatic shift towards increasingly aggressive nuclear and military policies, the Bush administration has opened a new era of increased likelihood of US nuclear weapons use. In turn, the administration has provoked the initiation of a new nuclear arms race as other states attempt to develop or increase their nuclear arsenals to counter-balance US military dominance and the threat of US willingness to employ the Bush doctrine of preemptive warfare.

Bush sees no hypocrisy in this position, in that Israel is known to have approximately 200+ Nuclear weapons and aircraft and missile delivery systems in its arsenal!

In 1986, Mordechai Vanunu, a former Israeli nuclear technician took evidence, including pictures, to The British Sunday Times of the full story behind Israel's secret nuclear weapons plant at Dimona in the Negev desert, complete with the total number of advanced fission bombs there (200 at the time). He said that Israel had also mastered a thermonuclear design and appeared to have a number of thermonuclear bombs ready for use. He was imprisoned for life.

As usual, the intemperate remarks by Mr. Bush were viewed with alarm in Europe, as German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, in an obvious response to Bush a day later, said that using force against Iran wouldn’t be suitable;

“…take the military options off the table; we have seen that they’re not suitable.”

“In 1998, Radical Neo-conservative Propagandist, Robert Kagan enunciated what would become a foundational belief of Bush Administration policy. He
asserted that “…a successful intervention in Iraq would revolutionize the strategic situation in the Middle East, in ways both tangible and intangible, and all to the benefit of American interests.”

“Now, over two years after Baghdad fell and the American occupation of Iraq began, Kagan's prediction appears to have been fulfilled -- in reverse.”

“The chief beneficiary of the occupation and the chaos it produced has not been the Bush administration, but Iran, the most populous and powerful member of the “Axis of Evil,” and the chief American competitor for dominance in the oil-rich region. As diplomatic historian Gabriel Kolko commented: “By destroying a united Iraq under [Saddam] Hussein…the U.S. removed the main barrier to Iran's eventual triumph.”

“…in the wake of its successful three-week war in Iraq, the Bush Administration seemed ready, even eager, to apply extreme military pressure to Iran. According to Washington Post columnist William Arkin, the official U.S. strategic plan (formally known as CONPLAN 8022-02) completed in November 2003 authorized “a preemptive and offensive strike capability against Iran and North Korea.” An administration pre-invasion quip (reported by Newsweek on August 19, 2002) caught perfectly the post-invasion mood ascendant in Washington: “Everyone wants to go to Baghdad. Real men want to go to Tehran.”

On July 21, 2005, Michael T. Klare, a columnist for The Nation, had written;

“There is no evidence that President Bush has already made the decision to attack Iran if Tehran proceeds with uranium-enrichment activities viewed in Washington as precursors to the manufacture of nuclear munitions. Top Administration officials are known to have argued in favor of military action if Tehran goes ahead with these plans--a step considered more likely with the recent election of arch-conservative Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as Iran's president--but Bush, so far as is known, has not yet made up his mind in the matter.”

“One thing does appear certain, however: Bush has given the Defense Department approval to develop scenarios for such an attack and to undertake various preliminary actions. As was the case in 2002 regarding Iraq, the building blocks for an attack in Iran are beginning to be put into place.”

“This record is worth revisiting because of the many parallels to the current situation. Just as Bush gave ambiguous signals about his intentions regarding Iraq in 2002--denying that a decision had been made to invade but never ruling it out--so, today, he is giving similar signals with respect to Iran. "This notion that the United States is getting ready to attack Iran is simply ridiculous," Bush declared in Belgium on February 22. He then added: “Having said that, all options are on the table.”

“That such efforts are indeed under way is confirmed by reports in the international press that Pentagon officials have met with their Israeli counterparts to discuss the possible participation of Israeli aircraft in some of these scenarios. Although no public acknowledgment of such talks has been made, Vice President Dick Cheney declared in January that ‘the Israelis might well decide to act first’ if Iran proceeded with the development of nuclear weapons--obviously hinting that Washington would look with favor upon such a move.”

On August 14, 2005, Anne Penketh, writing in the British Independent, reported:

“Iran is about to receive a major boost from the results of a scientific analysis that will prove that the country's authorities were telling the truth when they said they were not developing a nuclear weapon. The discovery of traces of weapons-grade uranium in Iran by UN inspectors in August 2003 set off alarm bells in Western capitals where it was feared that Iran was developing a nuclear weapon under cover of a civil programme. The inspectors took the samples from Iran's uranium enrichment plant at Natanz, which had been concealed from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for 18 years.”

“The UN nuclear watchdog is preparing to publish evidence that Iran is not engaged in a nuclear weapons programme, undermining a warning of possible military action from President George Bush.”

“Iran maintained that its nuclear programme is for peaceful purposes, and that the traces must have been contamination from the Pakistani-based black market network of scientist AQ Khan. He is the father of Pakistan's nuclear bomb.”

“The analysis of components from Pakistan, obtained last May by the IAEA, is now almost complete and is set to conclude that the traces of weapons-grade uranium match those found in Iran. "The investigation is likely to show that they came from Pakistan," a Vienna-based diplomat told The Independent on Sunday.”

“The new information, which strengthens Iran's case after a contentious IAEA board meeting in Vienna, will be a central part of the next report to the board by Mohamed El Baradei, the IAEA chief. "The biggest single issue of the past two years has now fallen in their [the Iranians'] favour," the diplomat said. The meeting of the 35-nation board, which ended last Thursday, urged Iran to suspend the uranium-related activity at its Isfahan plant, which many fear will be the first step towards building a nuclear weapon.”

“However those hopes will be dashed by the revelation about the IAEA analysis of the particles from Pakistan, which will remove any chance of Iran being referred to the UN Security Council. But the IAEA is not closing the book on its investigation of Iran's possible weapons programme. A team of IAEA experts arrived in Iran on Friday to pursue other outstanding issues, but they are unlikely to be resolved by the time Dr ElBaradei reports to the board.”

In November 2005, it was released to the press, that in Mid-July 2005, in a move to build a strong case for UN sanctions against Iran; U.S. intelligence agents held a secret briefing in Vienna for UN International Atomic Energy Administration officials, including its Director Mohamed El Baradei. The briefing was led by Robert Joseph the U.S. Undersecretary of State for Arms Control and International Security. The purpose was to unveil the contents of a Laptop computer allegedly stolen from Iran by a longtime U.S. contact in Iran, who they said received it from a second person now believed to be dead.

Recalling the lies about the Iraqi Nuclear weapons program, and the Bush regime’s bellicose foreign policy style, the revelations were not accepted by the UN or other nations. Several Intelligence experts said that a sophisticated spy agency (think Mossad) could have produced the contents of the Laptop.

To further weaken the Bush position, In September 2005, a new study was released by the prestigious British International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), based on on-site inspections and with inputs from the IAEA, says that Iran is at least five years from being able to produce a nuclear weapon, but a more likely estimate is 10-15 years. The report comes a month after a US government National Intelligence Estimate said that Iran was at least 10 years from being able to produce nuclear weapons.

The Bush Regime argument is that Iran is planning to develop Nuclear weapons that can be mounted on their Sha-hab ballistic missile, but this missile is a medium range weapon that might threaten Israel; but certainly not Europe or the United States. The question arises again, what delivery capability does Iran have, that would threaten the U.S.?

In December 2005, the German magazine Der Spiegel reported in its English language version; that the U.S. is preparing for an attack against Iranian nuclear facilities. The magazine cites in particular a Dec.23, 2005 piece from the news agency DDP by Udo Ulfkotte, a journalist with strong contacts in German's intelligence services:

According to Ulfkotte's report, "western security sources" claim that during CIA Director Porter Goss' Dec. 12 visit to Ankara, he asked Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan to provide support for a possible 2006 air strike against Iranian nuclear and military facilities. More specifically, Goss is said to have asked Turkey to provide unfettered exchange of intelligence that could help with a mission.

The Bush regime’s bellicose and unnecessary confrontation with Iran and North Korea; came at a time when the U.S. was already heavily engaged in the Iraqi War and the War on Terrorist networks in Afghanistan, and throughout the world, suffering mounting casualties, and a major drain on the nation’s resources. It also played directly into the hands of Islamic religious fanatics, like Bin Laden and hardliners like Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who use these statements and actions to prove to their people that the U.S. is the aggressor.

Bush is just one of an entire NFC Republican cadre of reckless demagogues with itchy trigger fingers. Representative Tom Tancredo of Colorado was quoted during a CNN interview on August 2, 2005, by James J. Zogby, and reported on t r u t h o u t | Perspective;

“Well, what if you said something like, ‘If this happens in the United States, and we determine it is the result of extremist, fundamentalist Muslims,’ you know, you could take out their Holy Sites.”

“You're talking about bombing Mecca,” clarified the CNN host. “Yeah,” Tancredo affirmed!

By even suggesting that Mecca could be bombed in retaliation for a terrorist attack, Tancredo made the world a more dangerous place. He is not alone, of course. Ironically, the radical NFC Republican has plenty of company among those who, either because of the evil they do, or the stupid things they say, have endangered us all.

Bush is a slow learner, and demonstrates a profound lack of judgment and complete and utter ignorance of U.S. National Security Force strengths and limitations. There is also the real possibility that his fanatical Christian-Nationalist beliefs are driving his actions, and the world, to a massive religious World War, which will never end, and which can never be won!

The Hot War Of Words With North Korea

In 2001, When North Korea had already offered to sign a Nuclear Disarmament Pact with the US, in return for a Non-Aggression Treaty, Mr. Bush failed to use effective Diplomacy to negotiate a Peaceful end to a crisis, over North Korea’s alleged development and possession of Nuclear weapons.

Director Kim Jung Il is a dictator running one of the most repressive regimes on earth, but he is not suicidal. Even if the North Koreans have some Nuclear bombs, the chances of their using them to nuke their neighbors is as far-fetched, as was Bush’s claim that Iraq was threatening the U.S. with WMD.

This is the sequence of events which have demonstrated that Bush is not only not a Statesman, he is a world menace!

   (a.) In October 2000, North Korea renounced terrorism and joined the United States in a statement that underscored their commitment to support the International legal regime combating terrorism.

An October 2000, Joint communiqué was issued: Neither Government would have hostile intent toward each other.

(b.) In October 2000, Secretary of State Madelyn Albright visited North Korea. , Kim Jong Il offered to ban future production and deployment of all missiles with a range of 300 miles or more. Also offered to halt the sale of missiles, missile components, technology, and training.

(c.) “We were very close to ending the North Korean missile program in the year 2001.”

(i.) In January 2002, President Bush delivered the “Axis of Evil” Speech during the State of the Union Address.

(l.) After doing all it could to poison the relationship with North Korea, negotiated by the Clinton Administration, Bush finally began to respond to the concerns of the Japanese, South Koreans, China, and the rest of the North Asian Community. Contacts between Ambassador Hill, the Bush U.S. Arms Negotiator, and the North Korean UN Ambassador began to show some promise and Six Way talks among all of the primary countries involved were underway by August 2005, with five years lost due to the Bush belligerency.

(m.) Kim Jung Il surprised all of the parties when he made a Strategic announcement that North Korea was willing to abandon it’s Nuclear Weapons Programs, if the U.S. will recognize North Korea and agree to a non-aggression treaty. They claim to want aid and trade and to develop the light water reactor agreed to in negotiations 10 years ago! They would be willing to allow the UN IAEA to return to North Korea, to monitor and verify compliance. The only problem is that Mr. Bush does not want them to have Nuclear Power.

(n.)Kim Jung Il claimed that it was his father Kim Il Sung’s dying wish that Nuclear Weapons be entirely eliminated from the Korean peninsula. This would involve removing any U.S. Nukes in South Korea.

It is ironic that the terms offered to the Clinton regime by North Korea in 2001, and rejected by the Bush Regime, are virtually the same as those which are now apparently acceptable to Mr. Bush, when negotiated by NFC Republicans.

Waking the Sleeping Giant in the East

The Bush regime’s Iraqi War and profoundly ignorant Foreign Policy and Re-Armament moves have set back thirty years of efforts to normalize relations with many countries; none more alarming than China.

- China holds a major piece of the U.S. world debt.

- Our trade deficit withChina is huge and growing. Previous administrations from Nixon to Clinton have continued the efforts to encourage the opening of China to trade and world free market enterprise. This has been largely sucessful, and a large and prosperous middle class is emerging in China. This young prosperous class, has a stake in peace and prosperity; and they will eventually lead to a less authoritarian society, as they rise into positions of government leadership.

This may take several generations as it did in Soviet Russia.

However, the Bush regime, with its alarming Doctrine of Preventive Wars, Unilateral Military Actions, and the well advertised goal of U.S. World Domination; have had the predicted destabilizing effect of causing the Chinese warlords to substantially expand their military, defense capabilities, and military spending on strategic and general purpose forces.

In June 2005, Mr. Rumsfeld, the Bush regime Secretary of Defense, spoke at a Security Conference in Singapore where Rumsfeld asked rhetorically;

“China appears to be expanding its Missile Forces, allowing them to reach targets in many areas of the world, not just the Pacific region, while also expanding its Missile capabilities within this region. Since no nation threatens china, one must wonder: Why this growing investment? Why these continuing large and expanding arms purchases? Why these continuing robust deployments?”

Had the Chinese been at the Conference they might have had the same questions for Rumsfeld.

Another NFC spokesman, CIA director Peter Goss, sounded a similar alarm on June 1st, 2005, when he told the Senate Intelligence committee that China’s military improvements and buildup.

“…could tilt the balance of power in the Taiwan strait.”

He went on to say that Beijing perceives the U.S. as trying to;

“…contain or encircle China, and that in response China is taking steps to secure needed energy resources and raw materials in other countries, is gaining a larger role in international affairs, and is obtaining military systems with which it could challenge the U.S.”

Michael Schwartz, a professor of Sociology at State University of New York at Stony Brook, has written extensively on the Iraq war. In an in-depth article, carried by Veterans for Common Sense, called; “The Ironies of Conquest”, Schwartz gave a clear indication of the unanticipated consequences of the Iraq invasion;

“Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and Iran stand one-two-three in global estimated oil and natural gas reserves. The Iraq invasion, which unsettled world energy politics in unpredictable ways, set in motion portentous activities in China, an undisputed future U.S. economic competitor. China's leaders, in search of energy sources for their burgeoning economy long before the American invasion of Iraq, had already in 1997 negotiated a $1.3 billion contract with Saddam Hussein to develop the Al-Ahdab oil field in central Iraq. By 2001, they were negotiating for rights to develop the much larger Halfayah field.”

“Between them, the two fields might have accounted for almost 400,000 barrels per day, or 13% of China's oil consumption in 2003. However, like Iraq's other oil customers (including Russia, Germany, and France), China was prevented from activating these deals by the UN sanctions then in place, which prohibited all Iraqi oil exports except for emergency sales authorized under the UN's Oil for Food program. Ironically, therefore, China and other potential oil customers had a great stake in the renewed UN inspections that were interrupted by the American invasion. A finding of no WMDs might have allowed for sanctions to be lifted and the lucrative oil deals activated.”

“When “regime change” in Iraq left the Bush administration in charge in Baghdad, its newly implanted Coalition Provisional Authority declared all pre-existing contracts and promises null and void, wiping out the Chinese stake in that country's oil fields. As Peter S. Goodman reported in the Washington Post, this prompted "Beijing to intensify its search for new sources" of oil and natural gas elsewhere. That burst of activity led, in the next two years, to new import agreements with 15 countries. One of the most important of these was a $70 billion contract to import Iranian oil, negotiated only after it became clear that a U.S. military threat was no longer imminent.”

“This agreement (Iran's largest since 1996) severely undermined, according to Goodman, "efforts by the United States and Europe to isolate Teheran and force it to give up plans for nuclear weapons." On this point, an adviser to the Chinese government told Goodman: "Whether Iran would have nuclear weapons or not is not our business. America cares, but Iran is not our neighbor. Anyone who helps China with energy is a friend." This suggested that China might be willing to use its UN veto to protect its new ally from any attempt by the U.S. or the Europeans to impose UN sanctions designed to frustrate its nuclear designs, an impression reinforced in November of 2004, when Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing told Iranian President Mohammed Khatami that ‘Beijing would indeed consider vetoing any American effort to sanction Iran at the Security Council.’”

“The long-term oil relationship between China and Iran, sparked in part by the American occupation of neighboring Iraq, would soon be complemented by a host of other economic ties, including an $836 million contract for China to build the first stage of the Tehran subway system, an expanding Chinese auto manufacturing presence in Iran, and negotiations around a host of other transportation and energy projects. In 2004, China sought to deepen political ties between the two countries by linking Iran to the Shanghai Cooperative Organization (SCO), a political alliance composed of China, Russia, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan.”

“China and Russia soon began shipping Iran advanced missile systems, a decision that generated angry protests from the Bush Administration. According to Asia Times correspondent Jephraim P. Gundzik, these protests made good sense, since the systems shipped were a direct threat to U.S. military operations in the Middle East:

Iran can target US troop positions throughout the Middle East and strike US Navy ships. Iran can also use its weapons to blockade the Straits of Hormuz through which one-third of the world's traded oil is shipped. With the help of Beijing and Moscow, Teheran is becoming an increasingly unappealing military target for the U.S.”

“At the June 2005 meeting of the SCO, after guest Iran was invited into full membership, the group called for the withdrawal of U.S. troops from member states, and particularly from the large base in Uzbekistan that was a key staging area for American troops in the Afghanistan War. The SCO thus became the first international body of any sort to call for a rollback of U.S. bases anywhere in the world. A month later Uzbekistan made the demand on its own behalf.”

The Associated Press noted:

“The alliance‘s move appeared to be an attempt to push the United States out of a region that Moscow regards as historically part of its sphere of influence and in which China seeks a dominant role because of its extensive energy resources.”

Not long afterward, Iranian President Mohammad Khatami ended his first summit conference with Chinese President Jiang Zemin with a joint statement opposing “interference in the internal affairs of other countries by any country under the pretext of human rights,” a declaration reported by the Iran Press Service to be a “direct criticism of Washington.”

In other words, the war in Iraq -- and the resistance that it triggered -- played a key role in creating a potentially powerful alliance between Iran, Russia and China.

China has recently scored a sucessful launch of its JL-2 Chinese Submarine launched ballistic missile with a range of 6,000 miles, allowing China to strike at targets in the U.S. from the waters near the Chinese mainland.

On July 4, 2005, Chinese President Hu Jintao signed a strategic Partnership Agreement with the President of energy rich Kazakhstan.

On August 2, 2005, Russia and China, former military and ideological enemies, announced that they had put their armies together for the first time in joint military exercises on the Shandong peninsula, in the Yellow Sea, about 275 miles Southeast of Beijing!

On July 29, 2005, the Uzbek government notified the U.S. Government that it must withdraw its forces from the Karshi-Khanabad Air Base within 180 days.

The reckless and incendiary rhetoric, and the willingness to defy the accepted norms of International behavior of the Bush NFC regime, has generated a new Arms Race and brought the world closer to the brink of a real Nuclear war.

In September 2005, the Bush Administration had the gall to urge China to begin a transition to democracy, contending that the existing one-party system is simply no longer sustainable” This at a time when Democracy is being dismantled in the U.S. and the NFC Republicans have virtually a complete one party monopoly over the entire American government.

The biggest problem in the U.S. relations with China relate to the large and growing trade deficit which results in a massive outflow of U.S. dollars to China. The Chinese Communists who tend to follow Marxist theory; believe that Capitalism leads to monopoly and gross materialism; however they are only too glad to contribute to the American addiction to materialism. Cheap Chinese imports of every conceivable form of manufactured goods are flooding the U.S. and putting the Free Market Capitalism religion of the NFC Republicans to the ultimate test of their ideology.

In spite of the increasing war of words, economics, and influence struggles in Central Asia, China has been playing a constructive role in trying to defuse a potential Nuclear war in Asia, by leading the efforts to find a political and economic solution to the elimination of North Korea’s Nuclear weapons capability.

ENDLESS WARS FOR WORLD HEGEMONY

Imperial Hubris

The NFC Republicans are guilty of extreme Imperial Hubris. The ancient Greeks defined the word to mean the sin of wanting to be equal to or like the Gods. The word Domination comes from the Latin word Dominus, which meant the Lord or God. In recent decades a combination of Hubris and Imperial thirst for World Domination has infected the Neo-Fascist Conservatives of the Republican Party. They have substituted Propaganda for Truth, Militarism for Defense, Unilateral, Preventive, and Illegal, Aggressive War for Just War, and self-serving Colonialism as Evangelizing Democracy.

The War Psychology of continuing NFC Republican governments will resurrect and refight every ideological conflict that the U.S. has faced since the end of WWII. - Learn from history how these words drip from the tongues of scoundrels.  When needed, learn how to unspin the “Newspeak” embedded in these Orwellian verbal concoctions of deceit into their true meanings.
- Understand how they use honor to mean dishonor; freedom to mean despotism; protecting the nation to mean putting the nation at risk; the godless enemy to mean the men, women, children, and infants marked for the slaughter; patriotism to mean crime in the name of the flag; liberty to mean oppression and slavery; peace to mean war and fighting terrorists to mean summoning up more and more terrorists to mortally threaten the homeland and ensure the forever war.
- Learn how the users of these words always maintain a safe personal distance from the Hell they conjure up, how they always offer up the children of other fathers and mothers to the sacrifice. Smell the essential moral rot of their cowardice and the blood on their hands.
- They are the real enemy.
- They thrive on the death and the blood of the innocent: fathers and mothers, sons and daughters, aunts and uncles, brothers and sisters, grandpas and grandmas, and our dear little ones, all of whose faces they won't see, whose names they won't hear and whose sacred being they so summarily dismiss.
- If you do not carefully attend to their machinations, their kidnappers will beguile you into a machine of murder and rapine, a hyper-gangster, nation drive-by machine.  You may dishonor your soul and spirit and sadden your loved ones if you succumb to these kidnappers' lures and temptations and outrageous lies
- For the love of your life, for the love of your own people and for the love of the peoples of the earth, Run!  Do not look back!  Escape these madmen, these monstrous, maniacal haters and violators of life!

The NFC Republican violators of life, have repeatedly demonstrated their historic; greed, lust for power, thirst for war, and the moral and ethical depravity with which they have ruled the U.S. during this time, is without equal in the American experience, and must be ended now.

UNCONSTITUTIONALLY UNITING CHURCH AND STATE

Within a few days of his taking the oath of office as President of the United States, Mr. Bush committed an impeachable offense, unconstitutionally violating the Free Exercise and Establishment clauses. He signed an Executive Order to create a so-called “Faith-Based” Religious Czar in the White House. This was a deliberate payback to the CNF Crusaders that had helped him get elected, and signaled his complete surrender of the nation to the objectives of the Christian Nationalists.

When the Congress failed to pass his sweeping Christian-Nationalist umbrella legislation that would have resulted in a Multi-Billion dollar raid on the U.S. Treasury, President Bush again abused his powers and did it anyway by issuing Executive Orders, that have resulted in the delivering of hundreds of millions of tax dollars to discriminatory Faith Based CNF Organizations. This was expanded again after the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina.

The CNF radical right has continuously sought to expand the President’s Executive Order which created the Faith-Based Initiatives Office in the White House. H.R. 1054 was introduced to make the office a permanent fixture in our government and to require all future Presidents to appoint a Religious Czar in every administration.

These unconstitutional actions by the President to funnel government dollars directly into houses of worship and religious organizations endanger both the sanctity of religion and the integrity of government. By accepting government funds in the form of faith-based initiatives, houses of worship would be subject to government oversight and unprecedented government regulation, including compliance reviews, audits, and perhaps even the subordination of religious principle to partisan policies and objectives. The CNF Crusaders can be expected to follow their pattern of endless expansion, as they have shown that they have no qualms about degrading the religious beliefs and customs of people of every other faith. Even more troubling, vulnerable individuals seeking social services could be subjected to unwelcome proselytizing during already challenging times in their lives.

On December 24, 2001, it was reported that Pat Robertson had resigned his position as President of the Christian Coalition. Robertson’s act was symbolic, but it carried a secret revelation to the faithful. It was the signal that the Bush administration was a government under God; that was led by an anointed President, who would be the leader of the new Holy Christian Empire, awaiting the return of Jesus to earth. The President would now be the instrument through whom God would execute his plan for salvation of mankind.

He was actually following in the tradition of the original Fascists; Mussolini, Franco, Hitler, Peron, and others, who all relied on exploiting the narrow disciplinarian, Orthodox, Conservative forms of Christianity to legitimate their absolute rule.

NFC Republicans, with the help of the Christian-Nationalist Fundamentalist Crusaders, have gained control of the Republican Party, the Congress, the White House, and now they are planning the conversion of America to a Christian-Nationalist theocracy, by completely taking over the last obstacle, the American Judiciary. If sucessful, the CNF Crusaders plan to unleash the Wrath of God Almighty against homosexuals, abortionists, pornographers, the minorities, the poor, the liberals, and against the elderly and sick of this nation, by their core of religious fanatics.

Months after Bush was re-elected Antonin Scalia, Associate Justice of the Supreme Court explained that;

“…the Bible teaches and Christians believe ‘… that government …derives its moral authority from God.’ Government is the ‘minister of God’ with powers to ‘revenge,’ to ‘execute wrath,’ including even wrath by the sword…”

It is clear that Scalia was not referring to the beliefs of most of the world’s Christians; but in fact, a growing Christian Schism that has embraced the concept of Christian-Nationalism..

Author Thom Hartmann has recently written on Scalia’s excursion into the ministry. It is important enough to be included here in its entirety;

Antonin Scalia, the man most likely to be our next Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, turned history on its head recently when he attended an Orthodox synagogue in New York and claimed that the Founders intended for their Christianity to play a part in government. Scalia then went so far as to suggest that the reason Hitler was able to initiate the Holocaust was because of German separation of church and state.

The Associated Press reported on November 23, 2004, “In the synagogue that is home to America's oldest Jewish congregation, he [Scalia] noted that in Europe, religion-neutral leaders almost never publicly use the word ‘God.’”

“Did it turn out that,” Scalia asked rhetorically, “by reason of the separation of church and state, the Jews were safer in Europe than they were in the United States of America?” He then answered himself, saying, “I don't think so.”

Scalia has an extraordinary way of not letting facts confound his arguments, but this time he's gone completely over the top by suggesting that a separation of church and state facilitated the Holocaust. If his comments had gotten wider coverage (they were only noted in one small AP article, and one in the Jerusalem Post), they may have brought America's largest religious communities - both Christian and Jewish - into the streets.

Born in 1936, Scalia is old enough to remember the photographs that came out of Germany when he was a boy - they were all over the newspapers and news magazines at war's end. It's difficult to believe he wasn't exposed to them as a teenager, particularly having been raised Catholic. And if he missed all that, one would think that his son the priest would have told him about them.

The photos that can be seen, for instance at
www.nobeliefs.com/nazis.htm, of the Catholic Bishops giving the collective Nazi salute; The annual April 20th celebration, declared by Pope Pius XII, of Hitler's birthday. The belt buckles of the German army, which declared "Gott Mit Uns" ("God is with us"); The pictures of the 1933 investiture of Bishop Ludwig Muller, the official Bishop of the 1000-Years-Of-Peace Nazi Reich. That last photo should be the most problematic for Scalia, because Hitler had done exactly what Scalia is recommending - he merged church and state.

Article One of the “Decree concerning the Constitution of the German Protestant Church, of 14 July 1933,” signed by Adolf Hitler himself, merged the German Protestant Church into the Reich, and gave the Reich the legal authority to ordain priests.

Article Three provides absolute assurance to the new state church that the Reich will fund it, even if that requires going to Hitler's cabinet. It opens:

“Should the competent agencies of a State Church refuse to include assessments of the German Protestant Church in their budget, the appropriate
State Government will cause the expenditures to be included in the budget upon request of the Reich Cabinet.” That new state-sponsored German church's constitution opens: “At a time in which our German people are experiencing a great historical new era through the grace of God,” the new German state church “federates into a solemn league all denominations that stem from the Reformation and stand equally legitimately side by side, and thereby bears witness to: ‘One Body and One Spirit, One Lord, One Faith, One Baptism, One God and Father of All of Us, who is Above All, and Through All, and In All.’”

Section Four, Article Five of he new constitution further established a head for the new German state-church with the title of Reich Bishop. Hitler quickly filled the job with a Lutheran pastor, Ludwig Muller, who held the position until he committed suicide at the end of the war.

Which brings up one of the main reasons - almost always overlooked by modern-day commentators, both left and right - that the Founders and Framers were so careful to separate church and state: They didn't want religion to be corrupted by government.

Many of the Founders were people of faith, and even the Deists like Franklin, Washington, and Jefferson were deeply touched by what Franklin called “The Mystery.” And they'd seen how badly religious bodies became corrupted when churches acquired power through affiliation with or participation in government.

The Puritans, for example, passed a law in Plymouth Colony in 1658 that said, "No Quaker Rantor or any other such corrupt person shall be a freeman in this Corporation [the state of Massachusetts]." Puritans banned Quakers from Massachusetts under pain of death, and, as Norman Cousins notes in his book about the faith of the Founders, In God We Trust, "And when Quakers persisted in returning [to Massachusetts] in defiance of law, and in practicing their religious faith, the Puritans made good the threat of death; Quaker women were burned at the stake."

Quakers were also officially banned from Virginia prior to the introduction of the First Amendment to our Constitution. Cousins notes: "Quakers who fled from England were warned against landing on Virginia shores. In fact, the captains of sailing ships were put on notice that they would be severely fined. Any Quaker who was discovered inside the state was fined without bail."

Throughout most of the 1700s in Virginia, a citizen could be imprisoned for life for saying that there was no God, or that the Bible wasn't inerrant. "Little wonder," notes Cousins, “that Virginians like Washington, Jefferson, and Madison believed the situation to be intolerable.”

Even the oppressed Quakers got into the act in the 1700s. They finally found a haven in Pennsylvania, where they infiltrated government and promptly passed a law that levied harsh fines on any person who didn't show up for church on Sunday or couldn't "prove" that s/he was home reading scripture on that holy day. Certainly the Founders wanted to protect government from being hijacked by the religious, as I noted in a previous article that quotes Jefferson on this topic. But several of them were even more concerned that the churches themselves would be corrupted by the lure of government's easy access to money and power.

Religious leaders in the Founders’ day, in defense of church/state cooperation, pointed out that for centuries kings and queens in England had said that if the state didn't support the church, the church would eventually wither and die.

James Madison flatly rejected this argument, noting in a July 10, 1822 letter to Edward Livingston: “We are teaching the world the great truth, that Governments do better without kings and nobles than with them. The merit will be doubled by the other lesson: the Religion flourishes in greater purity without, than with the aid of Government.” He added in that same letter, “I have no doubt that every new example will succeed, as every past one has done, in showing that religion and Government will both exist in greater purity the less they are mixed together.”

Madison even objected to government giving money to churches to care for the poor. It would be the beginning of a dangerous mixture, he believed - dangerous both to government and churches alike. Thus, on February 21,1811, President James Madison vetoed a bill passed by Congress that authorized government payments to a church in Washington, DC to help the poor. In Madison’s mind, caring for the poor was a public and civic duty – a function of government - and must not be allowed to become a hole through which churches could reach and seize political power or the taxpayer's purse. Funding a church to provide for the poor would establish a “legal agency” - a legal precedent - that would break down the wall of separation the founders had put between church and state to protect Americans from religious zealots gaining political power. Thus, Madison said in his veto message to Congress, he was striking down the proposed law, “Because the bill vests in said incorporated church also an authority to provide for the support of the poor, and the education of poor children of the same;...” which, Madison said, &ld…would be a precedent for giving to religious societies, as such, a legal agency in carrying into effect a public and civil duty.”

Madison also opposed - although he didn't stop - the appointment of  chaplains for Congress. “Is the appointment of Chaplains to the two Houses of Congress consistent with the Constitution, and with the pure principle of religious freedom?” he asked in 1820. His answer: “In the strictness the answer on both points must be in the negative. ...The establishment of the chaplainship to Congress is a palpable violation of equal rights, as well as of Constitutional principles.” Madison went on to suggest that if members of Congress wanted a chaplain, they should pay for it themselves.

“If Religion consist in voluntary acts of individuals, singly, or voluntarily associated, and it be proper that public functionaries, as well as their Constituents shd discharge their religious duties, let them like their Constituents, do so at their own expense. How small a contribution from each member of Cong wd suffice for the purpose! How just wd it be in its principle! How noble in its exemplary sacrifice to the genius of the Constitution; and the divine right of conscience! Why should the expense of a religious worship be allowed for the Legislature, be paid by the public, more than that for the Ex. or Judiciary branch of the Gov.”

But always, in Madison's mind, the biggest problem was that religion itself showed a long history of becoming corrupt when it had access to the levers of governmental power and money. In 1832, he wrote a letter to the Reverend Jasper Adams, pointing this out. “I must admit moreover that it may not be easy, in every possible case, to trace the line of separation between the rights of religion and the civil authority with such distinctness as to avoid collisions and doubts on unessential points. The tendency to a usurpation on one side or the other or to a corrupting coalition or alliance between them will be best guarded against by entire abstinence of the government from interference in any way whatever, beyond the necessity of preserving public order and protecting each sect against trespasses on its legal rights by others.”

As he wrote to Edward Everett on March 18, 1823, “The settled opinion here is, that religion is essentially distinct from civil Government, and exempt from its cognizance; that a connection between them is injurious to both…”

Yet now, in 2004, the religious appear to be on the verge of both corrupting government and being corrupted themselves by the power and influence government can wield.

For example, as Reverend Moon has moved more and more into the political realm - from funding activities of both George H.W. Bush and his son George W. Bush, to funding the money-losing but politically activist Washington Times newspaper, to financially bailing out Jerry Falwell, to setting up numerous charities that now ask for federal funding - we see an increasing and ominous participation of legislators and Moonies. Moon, for example, was crowned by several members of Congress in the Senate Dirksen Office building on March 23, 2004.

As the Washington Post noted in a July 21 story by Charles Babington, Moon himself proclaimed to our elected representatives attending the ceremony, “Emperors, kings and presidents have declared to all Heaven and Earth that Reverend Sun Myung Moon is none other than humanity's Savior, Messiah, Returning Lord and True Parent.”

Others, like Falwell and Robertson, who want to use the money and power of government to promote their religious agendas, are making rapid inroads with George W. Bush's so-called "faith-based initiatives," which shift money from government programs for the poor and needy to churches and religious groups.

All of this - the merging of church and state - is now being aggressively promoted by no less than Supreme Court Associate Justice Antonin Scalia, in no less shocking a venue than the nation's oldest Orthodox synagogue.

In some distant place, Adolf Hitler and Bishop Muller must be smiling at Scalia's encouragement of the growing conflation of church and state in America. It’s exactly what they worked so hard to achieve, and what helped make their horrors possible…

The amazing thing about Scalia’s senseless utterances, is his apparent lack of understanding of world history, or even more serious, his alignment with such outrageously Fascist ideas!
